Professor David Greatbatch and Sue Tate produced the 2018 report ‘Evidence on school leadership in an international context‘ for the UK Department of Education in which they looked at school leadership in six countries with effective school systems (Estonia, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada and Singapore).
They wanted to understand best practice in choosing effective school principals and in the style of leadership most needed in schools. The report’s purpose is to inform policy. The research aimed to understand the demographics of school leadership and to establish what worked in terms of selecting and developing school principles, as well as the leadership styles used in the schools.
