Thandulwazi Trust Maths and Science Academy

The Thandulwazi Maths and Science Academy, formally established by St Stithians College in 2005, is a nation-building educational upliftment initiative. Its programmes reflect the academy’s commitment to educational upliftment and capacity-building in South Africa by providing historically disadvantaged South African learners and educators with valuable learning and development opportunities through the following programmes:

Saturday School Programme

Curriculum enrichment and extra tuition are offered through this initiative for Grade 9 to 12 learners on Saturday mornings. It provides supplementary teaching in response to the often suboptimal learning conditions in many underprivileged schools across Gauteng Province. The programme focuses on delivering effective instruction in key subjects, including Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science, Accounting, and English, to learners from previously disadvantaged communities.

Teacher Development Programme

This professional development programme is designed to enhance the teaching skills of current educators, with a focus on Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners, school leaders, and teachers. It aims to upskill and develop educators working in ECD centres and schools throughout Gauteng Province, helping them grow professionally and improve their effectiveness in the classroom.

Initial Teacher Training Programme

Offered in Gauteng and Limpopo Provinces, this in-service training programme supports student-teachers as they transition from apprentice to master teachers. The initiative seeks to increase the number of qualified teachers in South Africa and strengthen the country’s education sector.

Academic Scholarship Programme

Academic scholarships are provided through this programme to talented learners from historically disadvantaged backgrounds who are attending schools that may not offer the resources needed to fully develop their potential. Through scholarships (subject to available multi-year funding), these learners are given the opportunity to attend St Stithians College, which has a strong track record in teaching Mathematics and Science.

The Thandulwazi Trust is 100% donor funded, NPO and PBO registered and has a current BBBEE Black Beneficiary Base of 99.7% and BBBEE SED Recognition of 100%
