The Water Research Commission of South Africa carries out research and development and publishes resources in water and sanitation. The video below is a compilation of insights from the book a book entitled ‘Celebrating Twenty Years of Excellence in Water and Sanitation Research‘ (available to download free).
The book, published in 2014, celebrates water and sanitation research and development in the first 20 years of South Africa’s democracy. It reflects on the progress made in delivering water science to South Africa, covering policy and decision making, stories of innovation and empowered communities, and how sustainable development solutions were found in the water and science sectors.
The Water Research Commission of South Africa was established in terms of the Water Research Act (Act No 34 of 1971), following a period of serious water shortage. It was deemed to be of national importance to generate new knowledge and to promote the country’s water research purposefully. This was based on the view that water would be one of South Africa’s most limiting factors in the 21st century.
