Established in 1808, the South African Children’s Home (SACH) holds the proud title of being the first welfare organisation in South Africa. More than 215 years later, it remains dedicated to caring for children by providing a secure, welcoming and nurturing environment for its family of 44 boys and girls. 

The children in our care, from Cape Town and surrounding areas, have been rescued by the South African judicial system from circumstances detrimental to their physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing. 

Most have been exposed to drug, alcohol and various other forms of abuse – physical, emotional and sexual. Consequently, they often suffer from neglect, various forms of prolonged trauma and developmental problems. Our residential care, development and skills programme is designed specifically to address these critical issues. 

Our mission is to care for, nurture, and develop children in need so they become balanced, well-adapted, and independent adults. 

Our values are linked to HOPE, an acronym for honesty, optimism, perseverance and excellence. 

When children are placed in the care of SACH, a comprehensive approach is adopted to their well-being. Each child receives personalised attention through independent developmental and long-term care plans. 

We also design a therapeutic programme that may include play therapy, individual or group counselling, or access to professional services such as psychologists, psychiatrists, or occupational therapists. 

SACH provides a holistic framework that addresses the physical, developmental, and emotional needs of our children. This support is crucial because it enables children to thrive in a safe environment.
