About us

Established in 1808, the South African Children’s Home (SACH) holds the proud title of being the first welfare organisation in South Africa. Originally known as the ‘Orphan House’, its formation was driven by the vision and dedication of Mrs. Moller, a compassionate Dutch widow. Supported by members of the Groote Kerk and the Evangelical Church, Mrs Moller poured her heart and resources into establishing this sanctuary for children in need. Her profound commitment endured beyond her lifetime, as she generously left the bulk of her estate to sustain the orphanage. The

SA Children’s Home relocated to the suburb of Gardens in 1923. Forty-five years later, a modern Children’s Home was constructed on the same site, where it continues to stand today. Now, 215 years later, the SA Children’s Home remains dedicated to caring for children by providing a secure, welcoming, and nurturing environment for its family of 44 boys and girls.

The children in our care have been rescued from circumstances detrimental to their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being by the South African judicial system from underprivileged households in Cape Town and surrounding areas. In most of these homes, unemployed parents or caregivers struggle to provide for the basic needs of the family. Most of the children have likely been exposed to drug and alcohol abuse, and are victims of various other forms of abuse—physical, emotional, and sexual. Consequently, these children often suffer from neglect, various forms of prolonged trauma, and developmental problems. Our Residential Care, Development & Skills Program is designed specifically to address these critical issues.

Our Mission

Our mission is to care for, nurture, and develop children in need, for them to become balanced, well-adapted, and independent adults.

Our Vision

Our vision is to provide a home for the children placed under our care; a safe, protected, wholesome environment, where they can reach their full potential and become productive members of society.

Our Values

Our values are linked to the acronym HOPE.

Hope is a feeling of trust. Hope is the expectation that dreams will become reality. Hope is actively working to make something true, not giving up for any reason. Hope is the desire to make something (everything) better.

Each value is linked to one of the colours of our logo:

HONESTY

OPTIMISM

PERSEVERANCE

EXCELLENCE

What we do

When children are placed in the care of SACH, a comprehensive approach is adopted to their wellbeing. Each child receives personalized attention through an Independent Developmental Plan and a Long-Term Care Plan. These initiatives address the unique needs of each child. Following this, we design a Therapeutic Program that caters specifically to their requirements. This program may include various approaches such as play therapy, individual counselling, group counselling, or access to professional services like Psychologists, Psychiatrists, or Occupational Therapists. SACH provide a holistic framework that tends to the physical, developmental, and emotional needs of our children. This support is crucial as it allows the children to thrive in a safe environment. Without this program, many of these children might face the harsh reality of life on the streets but instead, they are allowed to live, grow, and learn in a secure, loving home given the emotional support they truly need and deserve.
