Afesis NPC

Afesis is a South African social justice organisation based in the Eastern Cape, with more than four decades of experience strengthening democratic governance, advancing socioeconomic rights, and building grassroots civic power in marginalised communities.

Founded during the anti-apartheid struggle, Afesis works at the intersection of community agency, accountable governance, and equitable access to land, housing, water, and basic services. Guided by the persistent gap between South Africa’s constitutional promises and lived reality, we support communities – particularly in rural and historically excluded areas – to organise, participate meaningfully in governance, and influence policies and services that shape their lives.

Afesis operates through two integrated programme streams:

1. 1. A Place to Call Home focuses on strengthening sustainable human settlements, with an emphasis on secure access to land, housing, and basic services.
   2. Advancing People’s Power works to deepen democratic participation by building civic agency, supporting community-led movements, and strengthening accountability within local and provincial government systems.

Across both streams, Afesis prioritises locally driven, issue-based organising aimed at achieving tangible gains, from improved access to water services to more effective municipal accountability mechanisms. These local wins help rebuild public trust, generate scalable learning, and inform evidence-based policy advocacy at provincial and national levels.

Afesis combines community organising, applied research, civic education, and strategic advocacy to ensure that lived experience shapes governance reform and development planning.

As inequality deepens and democratic participation faces increasing pressure, Afesis remains committed to building resilient communities capable of sustaining long-term social change. Our vision is of a just and equitable society with inclusive, responsive and accountable democratic institutions, and our mission is to support civic agency through catalytic interventions in sustainable human settlement development and good local governance.
