FoodForward SA recovers edible, surplus food from the supply chain and redistributes it to registered beneficiary organisations serving vulnerable communities. It targets registered NPOs doing development work (like skills centres, after-care facilities, shelters for vulnerable women, early childhood development (ECD) centres, healthcare facilities and facilities for the disabled) and takes a multi-faceted approach to addressing food insecurity. The Mobile Rural Depot (MRD) Programme was launched in June 2019 to address rural food insecurity – every month, FoodForward’s trucks take nutritious food provisions to rural communities that experience high-level food insecurity. This programme reaches more than 60 000 vulnerable beneficiaries in 12 rural communities. Outcomes include less stunting among pre-school children, and better health and educational outcomes.
