[Case Study] Growthpoint Properties --Christel House
In January 2018, Growthpoint Properties partnered with Christel House to support thirty Grade 10 learners at their school campus in Cape Town. Supporting these students falls within the company’s CSI strategy where we aim to provide skills development to students in historically disadvantaged communities.
Christel House aims to reduce the barriers to education in these communities by providing students with food and healthcare from early childhood through early adulthood. At Christel House, students learn leadership, develop positive values and embrace a strong work ethic, qualities which will make them much-valued employees and contributing citizens.
Through partnering with Christel House, we hope to provide students with a quality high school education that will prepare them for the rigor of the university system. At Christel House, students are exposed to a range of opportunities which will prepare them for the world of work.
Students on the programme have achieved impressive results since the beginning of the year. Amongst them, students produced 57 distinctions and the 2018 Grade 10 cohort achieved an 88.7% aggregate in their Math systemic tests.
The programme has run smoothly thus far this year. Due to the nature of the communities, there has been community violence which affected students’ attendance which impacted learners’ attendance. However, parents in the communities made efforts to transport their children to school for them to catch up on missed lessons.
Growthpoint hopes to partner with Christel House over the next three years, which will ensure that 30 students are supported up until Matric. Through the programme, students will be provided with quality education which will provide them with a more competitive skills set going forward. While students are selected and educated in their communities, there is a stronger relationship in their communities which would encourage students to support their communities in the future.
